A New Way to Stop Vision Loss After 40

A unique approach to correcting age-related farsightedness has been introduced into clinical practice at all UMG hospital’s chain facilities. This involves a high-precision diagnostic scanner for laser correction of implanted multifocal artificial lenses. This method eliminates optical defects that occur after the installation of artificial lenses for vision correction after age 40. Age-related farsightedness, or presbyopia, develops in most people after age 40 due to lens aging and makes it difficult to read, use devices, and perform other everyday tasks. Nearly two billion people worldwide suffer from this condition. To correct age-related farsightedness, doctors replace the patient's natural lenses with multifocal artificial lenses. However, complications often arise after the procedure, including glare from headlights when driving at night and double vision in low light. This significantly impacts quality of life, making it difficult for the person to read, work under certain conditions, or drive. The problem lies in individual anatomical differences – each person's optical center is positioned differently, and these nuances are not taken into account without highly accurate diagnostics. "The key factor for success is the precise alignment of the implanted lens. We were the first in Russia to use a specialized diagnostic scanner that takes into account the anatomical features of the eye and corrects possible optical defects after implantation. In such cases, this is the optimal solution. The procedure takes no more than ten minutes and eliminates distortions, restoring clarity and contrast of vision," explains Elias Raid, MD, PhD, Director of the EMC Ophthalmology Clinic, UMG hospital’s chain. Laser correction is performed no earlier than two months after surgery. As a result, patients are free of glare and double vision, and their vision is restored to its original quality.
